The trust between the doctor & the patient is the key to right addressal of the problems. A doctor’s successful career depends on how he treats his patients & what is his goodwill. To build this trust, the communication between the practitioner & the patient should be effective & clear. Your communication as a medical professional is a balance of asserting, analyzing & showcasing understanding of the patient’s issues. Follow these tips to communicate effectively & build a rapport with your patient.

Doctor-Patient Cooperation in Australia

Research shows that the majority of the patients feel respected, understood, listened to & sought after by their Doctors in Australia. Australian medical sector is gifted with a high calibre of care provided to the patients. The data from Australian Bureaus of Statistics proves this fact.

Let’s take a glance.

  • Percentage of patients that felt they were carefully listened to by their GPs: 75%
  • Percentage of patients that felt they were carefully listened to by their Medical Specialists: 79%
  • Percentage of patients that felt they were always treated with respect by their GPs: 80%
  • Percentage of patients that felt they were always treated with respect by their Medical Specialists: 82%
  • Percentage of patients that felt they were being given enough time during appointments by their GPs: 76%
  • Percentage of patients that felt they were being given enough time during appointments by their Medical Specialists: 80%

These statistics define the quality of communication & interaction between medical experts & patients. However, there is a scope of great improvement in these stats. Let’s find out how patient communication by doctors can be improved.

Be an Active Listener:

Active listening doesn’t only mean paying attention to verbal communication but also to the non-verbal cues. You also need to pick up the client’s emotions. All these factors can help build a strong communication line & opening up with your patient. It will help you to respond better to the patient’s problems.

Asking Open-ended Questions:

Effective communication sometimes means talking less & listening more. In fact, it is a better way when you’re in the role of active listener. Asking open-ended questions which don’t have simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answers is important. Open-ended questions will have more detailed answers & you can understand your patient’s concerns better. It even makes you look more interested in the conversation when you ask better questions.

Check your Non-verbal Cues:

It is important to stay attentive while talking with your patient. Checking your phone constantly or looking away while your patient is talking is a negative cue. It will definitely turn down your impression & it will seem like you’re not interested in the patient. Also, these things will hamper your ability to understand the patient’s issue completely.
