Covid19: Revolutionizing the Indian Education Set Up

2 1

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change’. – Stephen Hawking.

Covid 19 has proved this saying.  In order to survive, almost every sector was bound to change its processes. Amidst all the sectors, however, we witnessed technological boom in education sector. All the schools, college, educational institutions and universities realized the major challenge which this pandemic had put. The challenge was to provide education in tandem with the constant changes thrown by covid 19. The major mindset carried a thought that education could only take place when the learner and student are sitting in a classroom.  Emergence of this pandemic broke this conception.

The disruption in education sector has left scholars, citizens and bureaucrats in awe and they are still working on reinventing the best way to impart class education. The advent of smart classrooms gave a way to reimaging the virtual classroom system. However, it was not easy for anyone to break the traditional classroom setting and go for the virtual settings.  A vast majority of students only feel comfortable with the traditional classroom settings when it comes to education. Despite of the fact that we have many ed-tech platforms in India, there is less awareness about it in semi urban and rural areas about e-education methods

Breaking the shell, now the courses are being taught online and most of the examinations are conducted via online platform.  With an added advantage, this will also strengthen the internet connectivity throughout rural India. For the better interaction between learner and the teacher, robust internet connection is must.  Few students adapt the know-how very quickly, but some take time to get acquainted with the technicalities.  The emergence of Covid 19 also taught us that not only students need to adjust, even the teachers need to break the mundane teaching methods. Eventually, the students will be more interested through new learning methods. The active participation of teachers is equally important.

The e-education has certainly given an edge to the students as well as the teachers. India has robust 4G network   which has accelerated the growth of e-education. This would certainly change the landscape of education in India.  Although education industry was badly hit by covid 19, but Indian education system got it backed up by technology. The barriers of location and language are breaking with more involvement of technology in education. The ed-tech firms have made the education more seamless.  People also hold the notion that online degrees do not hold the same value as compared to the offline degrees, which is not true. The online degrees hold the similar value. For better reach, the schools must start leveraging AR and VR technology which would certainly make a solid online infrastructure. Schools and educational institution need to invest more into e-education technologies for better incorporation.

Covid 19 has paved the way for schools to become more technology oriented which is for the benefit of whole school administration. Installation of apps like Skype, zoom have become the new normal.  Not just online learning, the schools will also require tools for effective administration and communication. It would be somehow keeping a track of everything via online methods, like uploading courses, tracking attendance or progress of students, creating live virtual classes. There would be more innovation in education methods with screen sharing, lecture recording and whiteboard teaching. Even post covid 19, schools can function online which would certainly be beneficial for them to manage the administrative functions and they can focus on their core- how to impart education effectively. People are having more sensitized towards e-education now due to covid 19 because of technology penetration into education. It is predicted that even post covid 19, a lot of schools and educational institutions would use e-learning platform. With the more demand of e-education, the users will demand more customized content and user friendly interface. Customized learning and engagement would serve the purpose. The education would be more internationalized and global.

However, many differ with such education system and want to be in classroom. Several parents are not happy with e-learning classes because that has increased the screen time for their children and as a result it has also reduced the time for physical activities.  A lot of parents are not very comfortable with the technology, so it becomes a hindrance for them. In many cases, there are certain internet issues. People who have nuclear families, parents have to take break from their work so that their children can study online. Every child has a different body language and that is very important for a teacher to understand which a teacher can observe during online classes.

Isn’t it important that we should have a study environment which focuses more on moral and intellectual development of the learner? As per the report of world economic forum, there is unprecedented increase in video conferencing, language apps, virtual learning, India has certainly witnessed an increase in adoption of technology. Covid 19 has certainly questioned made experts and scholars rethink about the current education system.
